Donald Calne – IAPRD Scholarship Fund

The International Association of Parkinsonism and Related Disorders (IAPRD) is pleased to announce formation of the Donald Calne – IAPRD Scholarship Fund.

This fund honors Dr. Calne’s immense contributions to the understanding and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, his teaching and mentoring of legions of residents and fellows who are now working throughout the world, founding of Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, and contributions to the IAPRD and its members.

About Donald Calne

Donald Calne, DM, OC, FRSC pioneered the use of L-dopa, L-dopa with carbidopa, and bromocriptine for treatment of Parkinson’s disease. With the late John Kebabian, he postulated and then identified the existence of D1 and D2 receptors and with his UBC-PET team demonstrated damage to the basal ganglia in presymptomatic parkinsonian patients. A prolific researcher, he published >450 peer-reviewed manuscripts and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, which has become the journal of the IAPRD. A Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia, Donald has received numerous national and international awards and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, two of Canada’s highest honors.

The Donald-Calne IAPRD Scholarship Awards are intended to encourage trainees to specialize in research and treatment of parkinsonism and related disorders. We expect to begin this program in 2024.
